“I Like Older Women” Is Not a Sexy Pickup Line

If you want to ask out a grown woman, come at it like a man

The kid who came to my blackjack table couldn’t have been more than twenty-one years old. When he took a seat, he’d smiled at me as he cleaned his glasses and tossed a fifty-dollar bill on the table.

He didn’t talk much beyond please and thank you. I’d have forgotten all about him after I cashed out his winnings an hour later, but then he asked for a pen.

“Oh, sure,” I’d told him.

He’d scribbled something down on a piece of paper he’d found. Then, he’d flipped it over and slid it back to me like he was negotiating a salary. It was weird. But that’s not the part of the encounter that stood out to me. What made me squint and think, ew, was when my new friend spoke. He told me, with stone cold eye contact, “You know, I like older women. Here’s my number.”

It was the least sexy line I’ve heard in my life.

I’ll admit, I felt kind of bad for the kid for a second. He didn’t offend me, and I understood why someone younger would want to trade up. There are lots of men out there who prefer to date a mature woman. Specifically, men between the ages of 20–29, according to a survey by Elitesingles of 450,000 daters.
