Before I realized kids are not for me my ex-husband talked about what we would tell our future biracial children. I remember when I student taught a fourth grade boy wanted to mention his skin color when we were talking about Black History Month. He faltered before touching his skin. I asked if he meant he was black and his eyes got wide.

“That’s a racist word,” he said.

It broke my heart having to explain to fourth graders mentioning you’re black isn’t racist. Interesting from the other side of it. Thank you.
